Tests of the power plant on the lead vessel of project 23120 “Elbrus” are being completed

Northern Shipyard completes testing of the main power plant of the lead ship logistics support project 23120 "Elbrus" for the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation - the equipment is working properly.

The power plant consists of four diesel generators. Start-up of the main engines, load testing of the parking and emergency diesel generators, commissioning of boilers designed to heat the vessel - the final stage of the Elbrus mooring tests, taking place at the outfitting embankment of the Northern Shipyard. After finishing mooring, the ship will go to factory sea trials.

Elbrus has significant technical advantages over other supply vessels. The total power of the main diesel generators (18,400 kW) will allow it to transport 2 thousand tons of payload in clear water at a speed of at least 18 knots, and the ice class (ARC4) will allow it to sail in the Arctic seas all year round.

"Elbrus" corresponds to automation class A1, which means that the vessel can be serviced minimum quantity personnel. Elbrus has increased maneuverability thanks to bow thrusters, which will allow it to deliver cargo to ships on the high seas and in harbors where ships in use today navy, they can’t come in. High productivity of loading and unloading operations on board will be ensured by electro-hydraulic cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tons. On operating ships there are quite a few cranes with such a large lifting capacity.

"Elbrus" is capable of not only transporting and reloading dry cargo, it has the functions of a tugboat and rescuer, and can help ships and vessels in distress. For this purpose, it provides premises for temporary accommodation of 28 people.

In the next two weeks, the crew will move onto the ship to participate in mooring operations together with the shipbuilders and prepare for factory sea trials.

Elbrus, the lead ship in a series of three logistics support vessels, was laid down in 2012. Two other vessels, Vsevolod Bobrov and Kapitan Shevchenko, were laid down in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Project 23120 was developed by the St. Petersburg design bureau “Spetssudoproekt”.

The United Shipbuilding Corporation plans that the customer will receive the lead logistics support vessel of Project 23120 "Elbrus" by the end of this year. Director of the Department of Information Policy and Corporate Communications of USC Ilya Zhitomirsky told FlotProm on Monday, December 25.

Earlier, an industry source familiar with the situation, FlotProm, spoke about the successful completion of state tests of Elbrus. The vessel has returned to its home port of Murmansk and is awaiting the signing of the acceptance certificate. According to the source, the document will be prepared by Friday, December 29.

The press service of Severnaya Verf, the ship's manufacturer, found it difficult to name the timing of the Elbrus' delivery to the Navy.

As of 17:00 on Monday, December 25, the press service of the Northern region (Severomorsk) also could not answer the FlotProm correspondent’s question about the date of signing the acceptance certificate or the flag-raising ceremony on the ship.

As Anton Sobolevsky, director of the Spetssudoproekt design bureau that designed Elbrus, told FlotProm on December 21, the design bureau has already completed all the documentation. He added that the designers provide the shipyard with certain documents on time. “As far as I know, (for the transfer of the vessel to the fleet - ed.) everything is almost ready,” Sobolevsky said.
The lead logistics support vessel of Project 23120, Elbrus, was laid down at the Severnaya Verf shipyard on November 14, 2012, and launched on June 26, 2015. The ship was planned to be handed over to the fleet in 2016. The plant delayed construction due to adjustments to the project related to the need to import equipment. Severnaya Verf planned to fully complete the state testing program in October.

The delivery of the first production vessel of Project 23120, Vsevolod Bobrov, to the fleet is planned for 2018. The construction of the second serial ship "Captain Shevchenko" was frozen.

Project 23120 vessels are designed for loading, storing, transporting and transferring dry cargo to shore, surface ships, submarines, as well as for towing support and providing assistance to the crews of ships and vessels in distress. With a length of about 95 meters and a width of 22 meters, the vessels have a displacement of 9.5 thousand tons. Draft - 9 meters. Cruising range – up to 5 thousand miles, autonomy – 60 days. Crew – 27 people.

Among the innovations of the project is a dynamic positioning system that allows you to keep the vessel in given point in all weather conditions, two electro-hydraulic cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tons, towing winches with a traction force of 120 and 25 tons, a cargo deck with an area of more than 700 sq. meters.

The vessel's Arc4 ice class hull allows it to sail in Arctic latitudes, breaking ice up to 0.6 meters thick.

On September 14, 2016, after a short stay in the training grounds of the Gulf of Finland, the lead vessel of project 23120 Elbrus returned to the outfitting quay of the Severnaya Verf Shipyard OJSC. Having set out to sea late in the evening of September 7, the vessel completed the tasks of the first stage of sea trials, during which the main mechanisms of the vessel, running and maneuvering elements, communication and navigation systems were tested.

For some reason, the last two letters of the name and home port were painted over.

Project 23120 was developed by the St. Petersburg design bureau of Spetssudoproekt CJSC under the leadership of chief designer Anatoly Petrov and belongs to the class of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping KM Arc4 AUT 1 DYNPOS-2 BWM (E-S) Supply vessel with ice class ARC4. In fact, the ship is a military version of the standard sea vessels supplies and support for offshore oil and gas production. The Project 23120 vessel is designed for loading, storing, transporting and transferring dry cargo to shore, surface ships, submarines and vessels, as well as for towing support and assistance to those in distress.

The total displacement of the vessel with a draft of 8.5 m is about 9000 tons, the deadweight of the vessel with a draft of 8.5 m is about 3600 tons. Main dimensions: length - 90.0 m, width - 22.0 m, maximum draft - 8.65 m. The specific speed of the vessel when fully loaded at maximum draft and waves up to three points is at least 18 knots. The power of the main diesel generators is 15,000 kW; Azipod-type rotary columns are used as propulsion. The reserve autonomy is 60 days and the cruising range is 5,000 miles. Accommodation is provided for a crew of 27 crew members, but during transport or rescue operations the ship's premises can accommodate up to 43 people. Provision is made for mounting standard sea containers on the deck: 40 twenty-foot or 20 forty-foot.

The contract for the construction of a series of three ships worth 11.715 billion rubles was signed by the Russian Ministry of Defense on June 29, 2012. In accordance with it, the first vessel was to be delivered to the customer by November 25, 2014 for Northern Fleet, the second - by November 25, 2015 for the Black Sea Fleet, the third - by November 25, 2016 for the Pacific Fleet, but in 2013 the terms of the contract were postponed to a later date.

In St. Petersburg, at the Severnaya Verf shipbuilding enterprise, at this very moment the lead logistics support vessel of Project 23120 Elbrus is undergoing mooring tests. I, along with Defend Russia correspondent Anastasia Voskresenskaya, boarded the ship to find out all the details about Elbrus and photograph all possible details.

Severnaya Verf is 103 years old, and over its long life the plant has built about 600 ships and vessels. The shipyard is interesting because it was, to some extent, an experimental testing ground: everything here was created according to the principle of the Guinness Book of Records - “the largest”, “the fastest”. Now the plant builds both military and civilian ships, including logistics support vessels.

2.

One of them, namely the lead logistics support vessel of project 23120 Elbrus, is currently undergoing outfitting work and mooring tests. Project 23120 was developed by the St. Petersburg design bureau "Spetssudoproekt", and the ship itself was laid down at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in 2012.

3. Shall we go inside? Let's put on our helmets and go :)

4.

5.

"Elbrus" is designed for loading, storing, transporting and transferring cargo ashore and to ships, as well as for towing support, providing assistance to the crews of ships and vessels in distress.

6.

Now, as part of the completion, the sewing and installation of equipment in residential and service areas, commissioning work on various units and devices are being carried out, installation and hydraulic tests of general ship systems and power plant systems are being carried out.

7.

The premises themselves inside the ship are already completely ready. At the moment, furniture is being installed and fastened at Elbrus. The furniture on the ship will be very good.

8.

9.

As for mooring tests, they include: testing electrical equipment, checking the operation of towing, cargo and mooring devices, communications and navigation equipment. Now the shipbuilders are preparing to check the main power plant and start up diesel generators and the systems that serve them.

10.

At this stage, shipbuilders check all systems of the vessel under construction using more than 120 mooring test methods.

11.

Work on Elbrus is progressing actively. Shipwrights work overtime.

12.

To resolve all current issues, a temporary office was equipped at Elbrus. There are meetings here where builders communicate with the designer, and there is also an in-plant telephone. For now, the ship receives shore-based electricity, and after the launch of diesel engines, it will switch to its own, ship-based electricity.

13.

Tests of the emergency diesel generator have already been completed, and the standby diesel generator has been started. It was thanks to them and controlled propulsion systems - rudder propellers - that Elbrus, in comparison with ships with conventional propulsion systems, received better maneuverability both in course and speed. The ships of this project can, according to shipbuilders, spin around their axis like a tractor. This means they can moor for cargo delivery at any time and from any angle. In addition, this technical solution made it possible to reduce the volume of the engine room, increasing cargo capacity.

14.

The main characteristics of Project 23120 logistics support vessels are as follows: length - about 95 meters, width - about 22 meters, displacement - approximately 10,000 tons, cruising range - about 5,000 miles, autonomy - about 60 days. The ship is designed for 27 crew members, but in the event of rescue operations, the number of people on board the Elbrus can be increased to 43. For comparison, this is ten times less than the number of people building the ship now. By the way, in the room intended for the rescued, the same shipwrights’ office is now located.

15.

As for cargo delivery, Elbrus can transport about forty twenty-foot containers or, conversely, twenty forty-foot ones. All containers are placed on the cargo deck. Contents - everything that fits into the container. But no liquids, only dry cargo. For loading and unloading containers on the Elbrus there are two symmetrically located cranes of 50 tons each. 16.

"Elbrus" has a high ice class ARC4, which gives it the opportunity to sail in Arctic latitudes. The vessel's hull thickness has been increased and a double side is used. That is, there is an air gap between the walls. This is especially true for those compartments where water and fuel tanks are located.

17.

18.

The cabins on Elbrus are single and double. In the latter, the beds are arranged in two tiers. There is a bathroom in every cabin.

19.

The ship uses several types of insulation, including liquid insulation - "Teplotor". A layer of 3 mm replaces the usual glass wool, 6-7 centimeters thick. So, in addition to convenient application, Teplotor’s big advantage is also its space saving. This is especially true where a wide viewing angle from the window is important, as, for example, on the captain's bridge. In Arctic conditions, this isolation also worked well. Otherwise, according to the ship's builders, it would not have been used.

A series of three logistics support vessels with a high ice class ARC4 based on Project 23120 is being built at the Severnaya Verf Shipyard OJSC for the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in accordance with the contract dated June 29, 2012, concluded between the Severnaya Verf Shipyard OJSC and the Federal Agency for the supply of weapons, military.

The contract provides for the construction of the lead vessel and two serial ones. The lead vessel should be delivered to the customer in November 2014, the second - in November 2015, the third - in November 2016. Vessels based on Project 23120 will be built for the Northern, Black Sea and Pacific Fleet. The vessels have a high ice class - ARC4, that is, they have the ability to sail year-round in the Arctic seas.

The cost of building a series of ships is 11.715 billion rubles, the cost of building the lead ship is 3.9 billion rubles.

The designer of ships based on project 23120 is Spetssudoproekt CJSC (St. Petersburg).

Architectural and structural type: marine, steel, single-deck vessel with rudder propellers, a deckhouse in the bow, a free deck area in the stern, a double bottom and double sides, bow thrusters and a towing winch.
