The Buryat language is one of the official languages of the Republic of Buryatia. About 283 thousand people speak this language. Of these, there are 218,557 in Russia, 46 thousand in Mongolia, and about 18 thousand in China. The Buryat language is now used in everyday speech. Literary Buryat is used in print media, television, and radio.

Story

The formation of the Buryat language can be divided into two stages: pre-revolutionary and Soviet. The Russian language had a special influence on the development of Buryat. This especially affected phonetics.

Dialects

In total, there are five dialects in the language: eastern, western, intermediate, southern, Bargu-Buryat. The Onon-Khamnigan and Nizhneudin dialects stand somewhat apart. The differences are mainly in vocabulary, some in phonetics. The oldest and most widespread are the Western and Eastern dialects.

Writing

Since the 17th century, the classical Mongolian letter was used in official correspondence, office work and for religious purposes. Before the revolution in the west, the Buryats used the written Russian language. In the 20th century, two attempts were organized to create a Buryat writing system that would be based on the Latin script. As a result, the project of the Buryat alphabet using the Latin alphabet was completed in 1929. However, it was never approved. A year later, another option was approved. A year later, its updated version was adopted, which was unified with the rest of the alphabets of the USSR. In 1939, Buryat writing was translated into Cyrillic.
